Northwest Christian University to host delegates from the University of Macau

Eugene, Ore. — Northwest Christian University (NCU) has been identified as a beacon of inspiration by one of the top academic institutions in East Asia.

IMG_6083Leaders of the University of Macau (UM) are considering incorporating a Christian ethos into the value system of Shiu Pong College — one of eight residential colleges at the university. And later this summer, delegates of the school will visit NCU to gain insight into that process.

“We are very honored and frankly humbled that an international institution of Macau’s caliber would model its Christian Ethos in part on what we do here at NCU,” said Dr. Joseph D. Womack, president of NCU.

Macau is one of two Special Administrative Regions of the People’s Republic of China. Residents are granted a high degree of autonomy, including freedom of religion. On July 7, at 10 a.m. in the Conference Room of the School for Professional Studies Building, Dean Kenneth Leung will give a presentation on the unique educational system and academic culture of the University of Macau.

“In many parts of the world the idea of a university founded in the Christian faith runs counter to cultural and political norms. This will be a jolting reminder of how fortunate we are to have a campus where spiritual relationships are nurtured,” said Dr. Dennis Lindsay, Vice President for Academic Affairs at NCU.

The visiting delegation includes 13 students, and from July 6-15, they will attend classes on American language and culture taught by NCU instructors. During the trip, delegates will also be exposed to American culture through a variety of activities, including an Emeralds baseball game, the Philomath Rodeo and trips to Portland and the Oregon Coast.

On July 14, at 7 p.m. in the NCU Banquet Room, the visiting students will give individual presentations on notable cultural and societal differences

NCU and UM have also entered into a MOU for an ongoing cultural exchange program.
